This ring has a plastic gemstone that is shaped like a diamond.
I am trying to contrast the expensive and exclusive nature of diamonds with the cheap and common nature of plastic. The plastic ring is trying to be something that it is not: a luxury item.
I think the same is true with people. Sometimes, people try to be someone they are not. For example, in Korea, plastic surgery is very popular. Girls try to adjust their looks to match the "Western" face and figure. I think that they are like the plastic rings trying to be diamond rings.
They believe in the illusion that changing your looks can change who you are. But, just like the plastic ring that looks like a diamond ring, the person is the same no matter the outer appearance. The plastic ring will be a plastic ring even if some people are fooled into believing the illusion that it is a diamond ring. Also, this ring can also be a symbol for how society looks at things. Society values certain images. So, people feel pressure to be someone they are not so that they can live up to those images.
The materials I used emphasize my message. I used Acrylic plastic. This material is light-weight and cheap. However, the design was in the shape of a diamond. I think this contradiction works because people notice the shape of the diamond, but they see that it is represented by a cheap material.
This message goes with the human figures on the ring. Just because the shape or dress of the person gives off a good impression and you think he or she is a "diamond", they may be as "cheap" or worthless as the materials I used to make my ring.
