The Pearl 925 Silver, Pearl, 2007

In this piece, I wanted to tell a story by manipulating the scale of the work. As you can see, the one constant in all three images is the small pearl. The first image shows the pearl being held up by one person in between the thumb and index finger. Relative to a human hand, the pearl looks tiny.
The second image shows the pearl being held by two human figures. Here, the pearl is the same size as the human figures, which makes it seem bigger than it really is. In the final example, the pearl is being propped up by many human figures. The pearl now appears to be much larger than its size in the two previous works, even though it has stayed the same. I wanted to show how our perception can perceive the same thing differently depending on the context and how it’s presented.
Also, I was attracted to the pearl for its paradoxical quality. As you know, pearls are made by clams. So, the pearl is a mineral that is not quite a mineral since it is made by a living creature.
